Discomforts and Emergencies

There are very few true orthodontic emergencies. Our major concern is discomfort. If a bracket comes loose or a wire breaks, call our office. We will advise you whether you need to come in right away or if it can wait until your next visit. It is important to let us know when something breaks before your regularly scheduled appointment because it takes extra time to repair. Knowing ahead of time will help us be prepared and assist us with staying on time.

Here’s What to Do if You Experience the Following During Orthodontic Treatment:

Sore Teeth:

If your teeth are sore after a visit, take acetaminophen or a non-aspirin pain reliever while you adjust to your braces or new wire. Eat soft foods like pasta or soups. A warm wash cloth, heating pad or salt water rinses may reduce the soreness.

Wire Irritation:

If a wire is sticking out and irritating your mouth, a blunt instrument (the back of a spoon, eraser or the end of a toothbrush) may be used to push it out of the way. If the wire will not move, try covering the end of it with a small piece of cotton or wax. Clean nail clippers or wire cutters may also be used to trim protruding wires if the wire is light enough.

Lost Separator:

Losing separators happens occasionally after sufficient space is made. Notify the office if you have lost a separator and we will advise you as to whether or not it needs to be replaced.

Loose Bracket:

If a bracket is loose please notify our office during regular office hours. We will either schedule an appointment to re-bond the bracket or add time to your next scheduled appointment. Remember that broken brackets extend treatment time.
